Mas Selamat allegedly asked to go to the washroom before escaping [Reuters]

He avoided a 2001 dragnet in Singapore that netted 13 JI suspects. Indonesian authorities detained him in February 2006 for carrying false identification papers and handed him to Singapore in March.

Singapore has held him since under its Internal Security Act, which allows indefinite detention without trial.

Another 27 people are being detained under that law for alleged involvement in terrorist activities.

Another 31, most of them former JI members, have been released from detention but remain on Restriction Orders which limit their activities. Al Jazeera

Throwing up road blocks and monitoring airports, boats etc in the hope that this escape was a spur of the moment decision is simply wishful thinking.

If it was planned doesn't it mean that there is a JI network operating freely and undetected in Singapore.

Then again the authorities might find him hiding in a storm drain somewhere.

Hey asshole coppers — this is what you get from being the fellaters of the political elite. You spend precious time and resources bullying people like Dr Chee and everyone else who happens to dissent against the state — PEACEFULLY— by the way, and you allow dangerous VIOLENT folks (determined by the non-due process of the "justice" system) to escape so called "tight security" and hippity-hop into the sunset. Fuck off.

Why was this chap not even tagged? And this limping dude can't even run...The State has gurkhas, helicopters, cops and soldiers (wearing body armour)... and is looking more and more stupid with every new resource they bring in and squander.

Remember the "man hunt" for Saddam Hussein? Thousands of soldiers searching high and low... they finally found him in a hole.

To Mas Selamat: "Run Forrest Run!"

INSIDE JOB LA

Posted by: EugeneXL | 29/02/2008

about his limp: I assume he did not escape on foot, but arranged for someone to pick him up in a waiting car somewhere near by; he would have observed the escape hatch in previous toilet visits on route to the weekly family meeting, worked out where he could go from there, and asked his family to get in touch with his followers to make the arrangement; whether he had help in the detention centre itself I prefer not to speculate as there is no information at all

Posted by: yuen | 29/02/2008

Quick. Someone call Tommy Lee Jones. US Marshalls always get their man.

Posted by: Matilah_Sinagpura | 29/02/2008

You are so right Matilah_SIngapura. This a total mockery of the singapore police force. Not forgettting that it also highlights the hopelessness of the pap.

Posted by: Mofo | 29/02/2008

No offense Matilah_SIngapura, but I wonder if you'll still be saying "Run Forrest Run" when he comes back with his JI chumps and detonate your red-and-white butt.

Posted by: Ishmael | 01/03/2008

Fuck you la Matilah_SIngapura. Wtf you want him to escape for? To come bomb Singapore? Fucking brainless shit.

Posted by: Singaporean | 01/03/2008

i think he is "JUMPER" lol

Posted by: abg lat | 01/03/2008

maybe he right now playing ps3 or xbox....erm wii hahaha, lol wat bout search him on all hdb unit.this crook homy....

Posted by: abg lat | 01/03/2008

i don believe he is already out of this country,he will wait once everything cool down.

Posted by: abg lat | 01/03/2008

I am inclined to think he is alreay in Malaysia: I dont think he escaped on a sudden impulse or discovered opportunity, but planned it before hand; once the pre-arranged vehicle picked him up, it would immediately drive to Johor with him hiding in a secret compartment; while many such attempts are discovered, my guess is they are just a minority, usually inexperienced, nervous amateurs; the risk of capture is greater if he remains in Singapore

Posted by: yuen | 01/03/2008

From "singaporean"

> Wtf you want him to escape for?

Did I say that?

> To come bomb Singapore?

Now wouldn't that be spectacular? ;-)

From Ishmael

> when he comes back with his JI chumps and detonate your red-and-white butt

Don't be silly. My magic is more powerful than theirs is.

Posted by: Matilah_SIngapura | 01/03/2008

Why not someone put $500,00 on his head. I'm sure alot of people will start taking leaves, MC and ponteng from work to go for bounty hunting. School holiday is nearing, cancel your holiday and family/friend get together and do a sweep from Changi points all the way to Tuas.

Posted by: getitfast | 01/03/2008

I guess no one wants this to happen, definitely not us since we are already grumbling over it.

We have to accept what had happened and not act based on our interest. There's always a time for something.

What's more important is to stay united (though feeling disappointed), and when this matter is over, throw whatever shit questions we have back to the Government.

If the PAP can't answer having concrete sources, then it's another story to add in the politics strife.

Disunity only allows weakness to be manifested to our enemies, it's then easier to disrupt than for us to rectify the problem.

Posted by: unity | 02/03/2008

How much is our government spending for the military forces per year? Will they deserve any bonus this year? We invest so much, cause we need protection. However, from this incident, do you think our men can fight against a war? Hehe, what do you think? Thousands of men, can't even look after ONE limpy man??? very malu!!!

Will any of the top men resign for the matter? I think they should...cause they'd been fed so well, yet can't perform and embarassed the whole nation!!!

Posted by: joewe | 02/03/2008

is he singaporean?
i hope he thinks rationally.
but why would he want to bomb changi airport?
don't understand lei...

Posted by: rei | 02/03/2008

What's "world class security"? you can't even look after a limpy man in a piece of land not more than 30km...please refund our taxes!!!!

Posted by: joewe | 02/03/2008

Pleasr reframe from talking cock behind your mother's skirt.
Let us pull our resources to apprehend the man for the nation sake !!!

Posted by: Ace | 02/03/2008

May be the man is not limping after all, he might have made provision for disguse to succeed in his future escape by walking with the limp.

Posted by: Ace | 02/03/2008

If Arowana and pets can be tagged, why not wanted man ?
This would set off the alarm if his escape is detected and possibly even locate him any where in the jungle.

Posted by: Ace | 02/03/2008

Talking cock is better than you carrying useless cock (PLP) around!!! Our nation is now embarrassed by this "world class" issue. Arrogant, Agressive, and over self-confident led today's result!!!

Outsiders always say Singaporeans are native...do you get the point, why only after 2 years, he was able escaped?? He'd already earned your trust!!! Bodoh!!!

Posted by: joewe | 02/03/2008

>Outsiders always say Singaporeans are native

as a foreigner who lived here for 25 years, I do find that singapore's constant effort to be "world class" is actually responsible for it being "native"

first, this obsessive concern about "do we look world class" already makes one look insecure and immature; second, big achievements require an infinite number of small things to be done right, but these often get neglected so the end result is often half baked

the escape is a good example; I am sure the flaw in the security arrangement in the detention centre is fairly clear to someone who looks carefully, as the escapee did; if the people in charge of the centre paid some attention, they would have noticed the flaw too and prevented it; however, the important people had too many important matters to worry about, while the people at the ground level, even if they had paid attention, might not have any channel to report their thinking; the result is world wide negative news, instead of confirmation of Singapore being a reliable part of the big shot anti terrorist league

Posted by: yuen | 02/03/2008

This is typical PAP style deceit.
Mas Salamat is either dead in custody or sent on a secret mission.

Posted by: gone with the wind | 03/03/2008

I'm partly with gone with the wind. My money is that MAS has been sent on a rendition flight courtesy of Uncle Sam where is he now prisoner no. 18192074 (POW of unidentified nationality). All his shouts can now only be heard by Fidel or perhaps Raul. PAPa can't been seen to send MAS overtly so this plot was hatched. We look stupid, but right now someone has his nails being plucked out to extract information. Why the charade? Imagine the furore and the human rights issues if this was carried out overtly, not to mention issues with our neighbours. I might not trust Singaporeans with guarding MAS but remember the camp has Gurkhas, and these are mercenaries with a badge, they dun "relak one corner" and a prisoner run away. They'd sooner slice off their arms than to lose face and boy can these Gurkhas run, those who did NS in camps with Nepalese will remember that they ran like "got no tomorrow". So my take is that we are safe...but someone aint goona be chewing no nails for sometime.

Posted by: guantanamo | 03/03/2008

I am skeptical about the speculation that he was tortured to death or secretly sent to USA; it would be easy to find some formula to justify his being handed over to CIA, and I dont think he, after several years in detention here and in Indonesia, has up to date information worthy of heavy torture

I am also skeptical that the police really feel confident he is still in Singapore, which requires his escape to be a spur-of-the-moment act, instead of a carefully planned breakout with pre-arranged pickup. The manhunt is a gamble - if he is still here, he can be captured with minimal damage; if not, make a show of force to deter his sympathizers from any rash acts.

Posted by: yuen | 04/03/2008

Guys, i'm sure there's CCTVs planted in the ISD Detention Center.
Why they never mentioned about it???
Something fishy, huh??

Posted by: Selamat Malam | 04/03/2008

Since Singapore had "requested" from the Interpol...Why not request for FBI, CSI Miami, CSI Las Vegas & CSI New York too????

Posted by: Selamat Malam | 04/03/2008

Saddened by the whole issues.. With the HIGH SECURITY LEVEL here in SINGAPORE things like tiz happened very embarrassing..And 'sorry' is wat we're hearing now.Im sure many of us would want to know EXACTLY how it happens! Im confused here is he a SUSPECT or CONFIRMED TERRORIST???
I dun think the prisons/detention toilet windows is any ordinary like of our home , right???? Im sure it's all GRILLED etc....Again im CONFUSED!
LOOKING FORWARD TO A CLEARER & TRANSPARENT EXPLANATION!

Posted by: myopinionlah | 04/03/2008

very soon you will see in the papers and in the news that they have captured him, then you'll see vids and pics of them hauling away..but are they really?

i'm have a rousing suspicion that they will not be able to capture him anytime soon. thus to not let singaporeans worry, they will have a lookalike (with makeup of course) and pretend to drag him back into the detention centers, making everything seem like it's in control.

another theory is that, they actually still have him. but perhaps they tortured him to death and thus don't want to let anyone know for fear that they may be investigated. so they claim that he escaped and disappeared or was killed.

Posted by: Ev | 05/03/2008

WOW! The conspiracy theorists are having a field day.

If the guy got tortured to death, I doubt too many S'poreans will be concerned. Your average Joe and Jane S'porean is not known for fighting for the rights of others, never mind a suspected "terrorrist",

Posted by: Matilah_Singapura | 05/03/2008

Guys.....please lah. what do you expect Singapore Goverment to do now, they all are very malu now.

Talked so big like the security here is the best in the world. Now it's a big slap on the face, right!!
Whether Mas Selamat had fled or not it doesn't matter now. The world already knows that our security had slacken.

However, there's still questions about the CCTVs, why don't the ISD or the Police tell Singaporeans what's recorded!

Posted by: Selamat Malam | 05/03/2008

What crap are you all talking about here. Grow up and learn from mistake, don't be too proud. That is what all the comments on this blog is about. Mostly malay I guess. And Singapore is not BLOODY...!!!!!

Posted by: Nikki | 06/03/2008

Whatever, lah. Someone from the Goverment have to be a SCAPE GOAT very soon.

Just wait & see.....

Posted by: Selamat Malam | 07/03/2008

Who is he actually??
CONFIRMED terrorist, a suspect, JI members, a criminal or wat?????
He was never charged so i guessed he is only a suspect right?????????????????????????????????????????????????????

Posted by: myopnionlah | 08/03/2008

So far there's still no news about Mas selamat whereabouts, and as days passed the issue had slow down.

Just think it for yourself, 1 man - limping, 347km of S'pore ground, 100% securoty checks at all checkpoints, thousands of police and SAF personels, under ground detention center and etcs, until now cannot track down MSK!!!!

Really wasting Tax's Payers money!!!!

Let me tell you, this MSK is nobody at all. It,s the S'pore gorvement is making up stories....all this is to cover up their ass from all S'porean asking about the prices and ERP hikes.

They just wat to divert our attentions. THINK ABOUT IT!!

IMO, there is 97% chance that he got accomplices. Seriously, how far can a person who limp go?

Escaped for 2 weeks and vanished in thin air? There are report that he already fled to indonesia, but are the coast guards really that weak?

If the assumption about he have accomplices is correct, that means he IS actually hiding in Singapore. After all, Singapore have quite a number of high-rise flat. I doubt the police bother go door by door, do a search. This isn't an ancient china city you are searching here, this is Singapore.

I also highly doubt he will fled to Indonesia again, nor he will stay here forever. The only way he can escape from Singapore is through boat.

Posted by: K's analysis | 13/03/2008

*yawns* better catch that guy fast.

Tak Boleh Tahan the stupid traffic jam in the causeway and tuas.

The security so tight, its causing green house effect with the traffic congestion.

Posted by: zackire | 17/03/2008

he was tortured to death Brutally

Posted by: z | 24/03/2008

Sometimes, in the most unexpected places, mistakes are made, and things happened. Rather than lament on the incompetency of the Singapore government's inability to find a man who limps countrywide.

Singapore is not a big country, but when you get right down to it, it's not that small either. Millions of people live in Singapore, foreigners and locals alike.

It's not easy looking for a single man in a place where there are millions of places to hide.

For those who actually think it's not that hard to catch a fugitive has watched too much television.

Even at home, when we sometimes misplace objects, we take ages to find them, only to give up and then find them at a later date.

It`s because of your Asian Values that he escaped. Are you so naive and asian vlaues oriented to think he might still be hiding in Singapore?get rid of your asian values and you will find out where he is hiding.Use your brains,it`s in Malaysia or Indonesia, your neighbors!
