When one seeks to 'impugn motivess', one commits a logical fallacy, thereby weakening one's argument, therefore I won't even begin to speculate WHY the SDP is fixated on this death penalty thing. But let me assume that they are 'serious' for a moment and that the real motivation is to spare the lives of people charged with capital offences.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Capital_punishment_in_Singapore#Statistics

If you refer to the link above -- citing statistics presented by Amnesty International themselves, and assuming that this information is accurate -- you will notice that from 1994 the number of people executed for drug-related (so-called) "crimes" has increased.

The SDP apparently forgets that the death penalty has been part of S'pore law for A LONG TIME -- certainly from the time the British were in-charge. In colonial Singapore, capital punishment has been used for murder and mutiny. However statute law relating to drugs is a relatively new idea and the laws have been becoming harsher and harsher over the years.

Therefore in my mind, if the SDP were really interested in saving lives, and not organising these gatherings to skirt the tyrannical PAP's unconstitutional edicts on "public assembly", in order to flog their (the SDP's) political agenda, then for goodness sake make the stand and call for REFORM of the drug laws.

Get rid of these drug laws, and 'like magic' the number of executions will plummet like a PAP minister's morality.
